2010 is a sequel to 2001, both as a novel and a film. If I remember right, the novel involves teams from the US and USSR, and they are good guys working together. In the movie, the USSR team are bad guys, which means it's an entirely different story. It's also a rather badly done movie, nothing even remotely as good as 2001.
That ... is actually different from my recollection of the film. Then again, the film felt more like "Did you see 2001 and didn't read the book? Let's explain what happened, because Kubrick's film was gibberish." The only antagonist that stood out to me was, well, space and physics. But I've only seen the film twice, and it's been a while.

Re bad adaptation: what about "2010"? The whole premise was about good guys, and the movie turned them into bad guys. Ugh.
