Sorry File 770—We're Still Here
Mike and the gang at SF/F's biggest digital vomitorium spew first, ask questions later.
As you’re likely aware, the original website for Upstream Reviews was recently down. There is no truth to any rumors that we were hacked — the only thing that took us down was WordPress and malware. Our enemies are not talented enough to even knock us down.
Long story short, it was decided that the all-around easiest thing to do would be to pull up stakes and move over to Substack. The reviews are still here, we’re back on our feet and if anything we’ve emerged from this minor annoyance with things more streamlined than before. We’re back to putting out reviews, commentary and other content like our first-ever interview with Lady Alchemy creator Martina Markota, which I highly suggest you check out.
In other words, we’re thinkin’ we’re back.
During the rebuilding, I was informed that Dollar Store Santa Claus “China Mike” Glyer’s Daily Pixel Scroll for May 28th had noticed our absence as well:
Now, while I’m loathe to give the morlocks at that bloated, verbose copy/paste sweatshop any attention, usually they can get things about half-right. This single paragraph was so mangled it deserves its own fisking, in part because I WROTE those two SFWA articles mentioned above and I wasn’t gloating.
I am genuinely concerned for anyone, especially new authors, who got roped into the recent lowering of admission standards thinking they’d be a part of an organization that had their best interests in mind.
I pray to God nothing happens with the leaked data, and think anyone who remains a member of SFWA now has to either be a masochist or a moron, especially after that shameful spectacle that occurred during this year’s Nebulas.
And Glyer is still simping for them while dumping on other organizations like the IASFA who try to get a foothold and actually help writers.
And speaking of Mercedes Lackey, go back and re-read that article, Cat, or Mike, or whoever. Slowly. Put the bowl of lead paint chips down and really read it. I’d be willing to bet that you’d be hard-pressed to find a more vociferous defense of that woman in the immediate aftermath of what happened than that post. Our site called SFWA’s capricious cowardice out for what it was pure and simple, and the organization’s continued hyper-politicization of everything will likely be its end.
Our plea to anyone whos still thinks this utter morgue of talent still has any merit is this; run while you still can.
Lastly, this gem:
. . . the blog’s last entry was Declan Finn kissing Larry Correia’s butt. Maybe the internet threw up?”
Would you be referring to him reviewing The Monster Hunter Files, Mike? It’s a book review site. You likely mistook a good review for ass-kissing because you don’t know what good writing is, as evidenced by the fact that you rated Mazarin Blues 8/10. Tell you what, you leave the literary criticism to us, we’ll leave the lazy, barely edited low-effort aggregation to you guys. Deal?
Have fun at the mean girls table. We’ll be around to laugh at you for a long, long time.
What SFWA did to Mercedes Lackey is unforgiveable. It wasn't an award, it was an ambush; the luring of prizes and adulation replaced with public shaming. The social savaging of Mercedes Lackey was not inclusion - it was destruction.
The SFWA is now no more than a ravening gang and the Nebula Award no more than a tag to mark territory.
Make no alliances with vicious mobs, no matter how tempting... the claws with which they rip others will also slash you.
Thank you for supporting Mercedes
