I assume there is some connection or reason for the similarity but I haven't delved into the backstory as to how Johns crafted Junkyard Joe. Anytime I search "Geoff Johns G.I. Robot" the result is always Junkyard Joe.
I'm not implying Johns did this intentionally, but I see some serious traffic problems if DC has not given a thumbs up this. Johns' story outline sounds very much like the 1960s and 1980s stories of G.I. Robot, as well as the Creature Commandos comics.
I hope Johns gave a call-out to G.I. Robot. This looks like a pretty direct swipe.
