Thanks for this review. I know I read the book many years ago as a teen (our library had a lot of Andre Norton's books, and I read all of them) but I don't remember this one at all. It wasn't one of the favorites I read over and over. I'll check it out - -and I hope her books get a new audience! Is there an animal friend? She often gave her characters a sentient animal companion, which is something that I really liked about them when I was a younger teen but later got tired of reading about. It must have been a "thing" at the time, though, or very popular with readers.

Yes, Charis has an intelligent animal companion - a curl cat named Tssu. Her friend Lantee is bonded with a wolverine called Tagi. It might have been a "thing" at the time, but after a while, I started thinking it was something Andre preferred to include when and where she could. She seems to have liked animals a lot and wanted them in as many of her stories as possible!
Yes, I hear she was a cat lady, lol.... But she does seem to have been fascinated by the idea of many different races in space, including animal races we could communicate with. I got tired of it but it is a fun idea.
:nods: It is fun, but not necessarily something one wants to see all the time. She was more flexible in her Witch World novels; the heroes and heroines didn't always or often have animal companions there, but in the sci-fi stories she wrote they often showed up. I wonder if that was because she really didn't like technology and so wanted to include animals to make people less like computers - or to at least help her remember that the future wasn't all technology?
