While I haven't read the book, I'd find it quite unlikely that rescuing the Romanovs would have defeated the Bolsheviks, if for no other reason than the White forces were divided, corrupt, and prone to infighting. (And I HATE Commies!) Antony Beevor's book on the Russian Civil War was quite informative to me.
You're right. That's why the Romanov Rescue is only step one of the overall plan. Book two is en route for late this summer. So you might want to buy and read book one now.
